Every September, it seems like the entire world revolves around the kids going back to school; whether parents are rejoicing in Staples ads (remember those?), or kids moping about in the school supplies aisle at Walmart, the kids are the focus this time of year.
But what about Mom? Ya, what about her?
Now that the kids “are back”, moms fall back into becoming a second thought when it comes to well-being and self care. We always have the best of intentions towards living a healthy life, but somehow doing for ourselves –exercising, packing a healthy lunch for work, soaking in the tub for some much needed de-stressing – gets lost in the hustle and bustle of what we call life.
So this month I wanted to make back to school so much more than new outfits, haircuts, binders and erasers for the kids. I wanted this to be more about mom. This is about self care. This is about finding a place for you to get on track with what you know is important but always becomes an after-thought; YOUR health.
Let’s start with changing your mindset. The kids are all “scheduled” and routines are back in place, so let’s do the same for you.
Grab your phone and schedule some time so you feel prepared and ready to take this time seriously.
Here are some positive changes you can make in your self care.
- Evening walks after dinner
- Stretch before bed
- Go to bed 30 minutes earlier
- Get up 30 minutes earlier and pack your lunch.
- Bring your running shoes to work to walk on your lunch hour.
- Add one additional fruit or vegetable to your day.
- Drink one additional glass of water per day.
Schedule self care in your calendar
Take a look at my own calendar. I have this both on my laptop and my phone. Everything is scheduled from clients, going to the gym, to making dinner and walking the dog. If I block time out, there is a better chance of getting it done and that includes self care.
Find your self care people
But it’s harder than we think, right? I mean, who’s going to keep you accountable and make sure that you follow through? It’s much harder to be accountable to yourself, isn’t it? Everyone needs a support system; a tribe of sorts, that can encourage us and cheer us on to stick with our goals of taking care of ourself.
Check out the video I did last week about how to find motivation and what you can do RIGHT NOW to set yourself up for success.
And lastly, don’t forget my new Facebook Group, SCT for ladies only! We are already at over 100 women strong and it’s a great place to make friends, stay inspired and when the going gets tough (because it always does), you have a space to share and maybe even vent a little because we are all human.
So what do you say? Are you ready to do something for yourself and get back on that horse? Pick just one thing schedule the time in your phone and make it your mission to make self care a priority.
Remember, too much too soon, never works. Be patient with yourself and focus on just feeling good.
The rest will come.
